You are in for a special treat today!  I'm interviewing Dee Ernst, author of the romantic comedy, Better Off Without Him.

Dee is here to tell you all about herself and this fantastic book in the video below!

I'm also hosting a Better Off Without Him Book Discussion that will be running simultaneously with this blog through February 23rd.  Dee and I look forward to seeing you at the discussion.  That's right!  You can have a discussion with the author herself, ask her questions about her book or characters.  It's going to be a lot of fun!  There's still plenty of time to read the book and join us.

Here's a little about Dee Ernst.  The following information was taken directly from her website:

"Dee Ernst was born Elizabeth Diane Ascoli in Newark, NJ. Her family moved to Morristown, NJ when she was still a toddler. She started writing stories on a battered Royal typewriter when she was about ten or twelve, and she graduated Morristown High School determined to pursue a career as a writer in some form or another (she considered advertising, but luckily came to her senses). Creative writing majors were hard to find in 1974, so she attended Marshall University as a journalism major. That wasn’t working, so she tried Education, but that didn’t quite work either. Several jobs and years later, staying home with a three-year-old and trying to figure out what to do when she grew up, Joan Hamburg on WOR radio in New York was interviewing someone who said if you wanted to know what to with your life, remember what you were playing when you were ten, and try to turn that into a career. Since Dee was writing stories at ten, she sat down and wrote her first novel. It went nowhere. Her second novel got her a terrific agent and upwards of fifteen rejection letters (She reread them all in preparation of this biography). Her third novel, Better Off Without Him, garnered even more rejection letters from a much higher caliber of editor. Undaunted, she self-published Better Off Without Him in October 2010. She is now waiting patiently for fame and fortune.

Better Off Without Him
The following is my February 9, 2012, 4 star review:

Mona is most definitely Better Off Without Him!

I had such fun reading BETTER OFF WITHOUT HIM written by Dee Ernst. The character interaction was imaginatively written and funny. It was so nice reading about a 40-plus woman for a change. I was able to relate to her in more ways the one.

I enjoyed getting to know Mona and her emotional strength in dealing with a husband she's been married to for twenty years but finds she never really knew him in the first place. I also really liked Mona's friends and children. While reading, many times I found myself laughing out loud as well as craving a vodka martini, which I've never had but I'm going to be trying very soon.

Not only do I recommend BETTER OFF WITHOUT HIM, I've gifted it to a very good friend. The only criticism I have regarding this book is that it could use another edit.

Hey Dee! Great title! Great cover! Too bad it's too early for a vodka martini! ;-)

Hi, Sandy and Dee! Great interview, guys!
Dee, I was so interested in your personal story, because it has similarities with mine. And ... while romance isn't usually at the head of my reading list, I want to read your book! I think because, as you said, it isn't about a "chick" but about a mature woman.
Sandy, thanks for hosting Dee today. And Dee - thanks for sharing!

Hi Dee.

You did a great job introducing your book. It is clear that you write about things that are very near and dear to you, which makes if very easy to listen to what you have to say. You also seem very comfortable with yourself and your work and that is very appealing as well. Congratulations on a very well-done feature.

Sandy, thanks for another great feature!

Thanks so much Scott - to tell the truth, I was just getting over the flu and I was afraid to much DayQuil would make me a little stupid. I'm really pleased - and surprised - it turned our so well.

Thanks for stopping by Una - I love humor too. Susan Isaacs was always a favorite of mine because her characters always had such a great sense of humor.

I LOVE that you write about women like us! Thank you, thank you. The 20 year old heroine is why I don't read a lot of women's fiction.

I Know! Let me I tell you a secret - after reading The Devil Wears Prada I almost cried. That book was so popular but the main character - Andy - was such a wimp. Real women aren't afraid of any Devil, no matter what she wears!

"Better Off Without Him" is a fun read. I have to confess, though, that my favorite part was the description of how to cut your hair like daughter Jessica's one-of-a-kind look, because I seem to specialize in the scraggy hair look and think it might work for me.

I think I'd need to grow my hair out a little before I could copy Jessica's haircut. I usually keep it short so it can't stick out quite so far in all its usual weird ways. Not only that, her haircut really suited the rest of her appearance, and the total package suited her personality as someone who chewed nails for breakfast and then spit them out at people all day long. That was a great line.

Hi Dee,

Totally agree with what you say. I am also an author and my heroines are on the cusp of 40. I have two chicklit books out with older chicks. But lately, I've changed genres and am about to release a suspense/mystery with a wiseass chick who's 48! Somewhat based on what happened to me in the last year -- dumped by a cheating husband -- and having to tackle life as a single woman again. But instead of romance (although the romance is there too) I decided on suspense/mystery because at the time of writing this book I wanted to kill my ex! LOL.

I think there is a great future out there for that older-woman genre in chicklit, or henlit, as some call it, and this can also be used in other genres, such as suspense/mystery. At least, that's my opinion :-)

I have your book and look forward to reading it (as soon as I release my latest!). Great interview and great to meet you!

Sandy, as always, a fantastic interview!

Warm regards,

I agree, Sylvia - all those chicks can't stay 21 forever, and I think the 'older' heroine is here to stay. Not only are we smarter, more confident and have nicer houses, we also have better friends. I don't love 'henlit', but whatever the lable, long live the woman who understands that a good 401K is better than any designer shoe out there.

Hi Dee! I had the honour to review your book for Reader's Favorites, and I loved it. Your depiction of teenage girls is second to none! I'm so glad you self-published. You're a talented and extremely enjoyable author. Please keep writing!
