Book: Some Other Child
Author: Sharon Buchbinder
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Family Saga, Romantic Suspense
Length: Approximately 296 Pages
I have to say that I read for enjoyment. I come from a family that is loaded with alcoholics and drug addicts. I try not to read reviews or even book blurbs prior to reading a book I plan on reviewing because I want the author to build the story for me with their words and emotions. Generally speaking, the only thing I know about a book I'm set to review before I read it is the genre. When I do come across a book that deals with these subjects, I usually just stop reading it and move on. It is just too painful for me.
The difference for me with SOME OTHER CHILD by SHARON BUCHBINDER was the character of Sarah Wright. I related to this woman on so many personal levels, from being the daughter of an alcoholic to the health care provider as the lives of both my mother and father were coming to an end. I'm so glad I continued reading this book because I found it very cathartic as well as very entertaining with the other elements in the book.
With that said, this book was also jam-packed with fast paced action! To give you a taste of what I'm talking about, I'm going to give you a quote from Sarah. She's been having a very bad week. I hate giving spoilers, but I just loved this dialog. Sarah has been through a lot and she's tired of people judging her without knowing all the circumstances. She's a little testy when she speaks these words.
This is a SPOILER ALERT! "It's okay. Let me summarize for you. The police found Aunt Ida's finger in my freezer. I was arrested for her murder, which, by the way, I did not commit. I spent the night in cell with a drunken, amorous lesbian biker. I was set upon by a pack of media hyenas. Through the efforts of two outstanding attorneys, the Pit Bull and Sol Weinstein, I made bail to the tune of one million dollars." End Spoiler.
I hope Ms. Buchbinder doesn't mind me giving away some of her dialog, but maybe you can see now why I was on the edge of my seat for much of the book. Throughout SOME OTHER CHILD, I was not only horrified by the events taking place but also laughing hysterically and truly entertained.
There were a few grammatical errors throughout the book, but they did not slow the pace or progress of the reading at all. Overall, I really enjoyed SOME OTHER CHILD. I would recommend it to anyone, even those of you that have unfortunately had to deal with addiction and loved ones. If you like to read about family sorrow and secrets, suspense, mystery, thrillers and even a touch of romance, you've just got to pick this book up! I'm sure you'll be just as entertained as I was. I not only got hours of pure enjoyment reading this book, I was also able to reexamine some of my own personal issues.
Between taking care of her injured alcoholic mother and work, Sarah Wright, a pediatric nurse researcher, hasn’t a minute to herself, much less time for romance. But unbeknownst to Sarah, two little old ladies--her aunt and her ex-fiancé’s mother--are conspiring to reunite Sarah with Dan Rosen, a brilliant and demanding surgeon. When her aunt goes missing, Sarah is convinced it’s a kidnapping, but the police refuse to investigate. Dan flies to Sarah’s side to help her, and it looks like things might come together—until Sarah is arrested for her aunt’s murder. As the evidence stacks up against her, Sarah must find the real culprits and unravel decades old family secrets along the way.
